"This was a Bomber Command Raid made into occupied France prior to the landings on D Day to bomb the Panzer Division at Mailly le Camp. Many consider that this was the start of D Day. It was certainly the start of the lead up to D Day. The French underground had sent messages to London about the increased activity at the Camp and there were fears that this meant trouble for the men landing on the beaches.
